BiSN specializes in creating downhole sealing elements using thermite and low melting point alloys. This individual will be responsible for the development and characterization of alloys for BiSN downhole sealing technology. The work includes understanding the downhole environment and BiSN plug setting process as it pertains to the material properties required; using literature research, hypothesize and evaluate formulations; defining and conducting experiments to characterize the properties of possible alloy candidates. Additionally, the position requires involvement with the New Product Development projects, including analysis of failed alloy parts, review and analysis of material characterization test results, formulating and communicating guidelines for use of alloys in BiSN products, as well as developing methods, processes, and guidelines for alloys and alloy parts quality assurance.
Reporting and communicating research results to the technical manager
Using Thermo-Calc software to create, evaluate, and select new formulations
Overseeing testing program including creep testing, tensile/shear testing, corrosion testing, and effect of aging on microstructure and properties
Characterizing materials using optical microscopy and SEM/XRF/EDS/OES
Overseeing and developing/implementing guidelines for smelting and casting processes
Assisting in post-test analysis of thermite burns
Defining equipment needs
Finding and working with external partners (universities for example), for access to expertise or equipment when outside of BiSN capabilities
Interacting with and reporting results to clients when needed
Experience in material characterization using microscopy techniques mentioned above
Experience in non-ferrous casting alloys and processes
Experience in material properties and/or corrosion testing
Knowledge of steel alloys, corrosion-resistant alloys, and refractory materials is a plus
Experience in welding/brazing is a plus
